This house on the island of Sifnos enjoys uninterrupted views of the Aegean Sea, the lighthouse, and the Monastery of Chrysopigi. It is surrounded by low Cycladic vegetation, thyme, sage, and the pure and natural landscape of Sifnos. White volumes, soft curves, clean lines, built-in terraces, stone-paved courtyards with white mortar joints, and the distinctive projecting lintels – or “eyebrows”- above windows and doors. These are familiar elements found in the island’s traditional houses. The simplicity of the lines and the purity of the volumes give the house a contemporary, timeless character.
The palette of materials and colours emerged directly from the surrounding landscape. Terracotta ceramic tiles, used both indoors and throughout the outdoor spaces, create warmth and visual continuity, while off-white polished cement finishes reflect natural light and help maintain a cool atmosphere. Arches, open niches, organic curves, and handcrafted details add depth without overwhelming the space.
Particular attention was given to the smaller building, which now functions as an independent guesthouse. The stone walls, exposed timber beams, and small openings framing the views were retained and thoughtfully highlighted. Its characteristic Sifnian panostria, along with original recesses and details reflecting the island’s traditional architecture, were carefully preserved.
The relationship between the interior and the outdoor spaces was one of the project’s primary objectives. Large openings, continuous flooring, and the consistent use of materials and colour tones create a seamless flow between the courtyards, terraces, kitchen, dining area, and living spaces. At the centre of the composition lies the internal courtyard, the heart of the house.
Sifnos is an island that keeps its traditions alive through the way it is inhabited. And this house does exactly the same: it does not imitate the past, but carries it forward—with restraint, simplicity, and a genuine sense of life.
